Bend School District's nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, North Bend schools are celebrating School Lunch Hero Day today. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.

February is CTE Month which stands for Career and Technical Education. Our CTE programs at North Bend High School directly prepare students for high-demand careers. Our programs cover many different fields, including culinary, health care, manufacturing and graphic design.
Garrett Holmes graduated from North Bend High School in 1982. One of his favorite classes in high School was the construction class. In this class, a small number of students were selected to participate in the construction of a house over the course of a school year. This very in depth, hands on experience gave him the skillset to continue on in the construction trades throughout his life. After graduating from NBHS, Mr. Holmes attended the University of Oregon where he played football for the Ducks and received All-American Honors his senior year. Continuing his education, he received a Masters Degree in Wilderness Management and planned to work for the US Forest Service. When that didn’t work out, he moved to the San Juan Islands in Washington state and worked full time in the construction trades. After working for several companies and having his own business as a contractor over a 30 year period, he decided to change things up and move back to Oregon. His current job as the Construction Teacher at NBHS has brought his construction experience full circle back to the school where it all began.
The North Bend Construction program is a three year program. Students who complete the program will participate in Intro to Construction 1, Construction 2, and Construction 3.
Intro to Construction 1 is designed to introduce students to the construction industry and several of the trades that exist within it. In this introductory class, a great deal of emphasis is placed on workshop, jobsite, and power tool safety. The trades and skills that are emphasized in year one include:
BluePrint Reading, HVAC, Concrete, Electrical, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Wall Framing, Drywall, Tile, Masonry, Shop Safety, and Jobsite Safety.
In the Second year of the program we emphasize the following trades and skills: BluePrint Drafting, Plumbing, Job Estimation, Cabinetmaking, Finish Carpentry, Roof Framing, Surveying & Site Planning, Building Weatherization, Communication, Green Construction Materials & Techniques, Employability and Job Readiness Preparation.
Our third year in the program introduces the students to large scale projects. They learn the detailed full scale procedures associated with Floor, Wall, and Roof Framing, Modern Plumbing, Stair building, Cabinetmaking, and full scale Electrical Wiring. Year three students also get to participate in building projects around the school and also build set props for the theater group.

Chef Frank Murphy started his career in Ireland in 1982. He trained in a four year study/internship program at the prestigious Rockwell Hotel and Catering College in Tipperary. He moved on to a successful career as a chef, working in award winning hotels and restaurants around Ireland. His crowning achievement during those years was being recognized and awarded the all Ireland “Chef of the Sea”.
In 1990, he moved to Florida and again worked as a chef and here his love of teaching began to emerge, when he took a position at the Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm Beach. He moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1997, where he opened The Grounds Cafe. He again started teaching in 2012 at North Bend High School, teaching only two culinary classes in the beginning.
As time went on he was fortunate enough that his passion for food, students and life was recognized and he began to build his much sought out program into a complete Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway of courses where students complete an eleven-course series over three years. Graduates of his program have gone on to Oregon Coast Culinary Institute (OCCI) or directly to jobs in the industry. He has been recognized for Excellence in Innovation and Educator of the year from Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

Computer Science is a broad and widening term that encapsulates the technology that makes up our world. In our Technology CTE program, Richard Lowe has embraced several legacy and emerging technologies in order to give North Bend High School students a well rounded and inclusive look at technology around them.
Incorporation of emerging trends, such as 3D Printing and mechanical engineering has further augmented what we can offer in the classroom. We are using 3D technologies to help improve areas such as robotics and mobile application development. The students have the opportunity to learn multiple programming languages as well as where those languages are best suited.
Our current offerings range from Web Development, Computer Science Fundamentals, Game Development, Mobile Phone App development, Robotics and Embedded Systems. Students amerced into this program will have a great starting point for a career in the Software Development, Web Development or Software Engineering fields.

Jennifer Hampel has been teaching for 6 years and developed the program with fellow CTE teacher Jessianne Miller. They were trained under the SOCC "BAHCPP" or "backpack" program . It stands for Basic Allied Healthcare Career Pathways Program. All of the courses in the program are dual-credit. Her courses are; Introduction to Healthcare Careers, Medical Terminology 1 and 2, Body Structures and Functions (Anatomy) 1 and 2, and Medical Law and Ethics.
Ms. Hampel focuses on a lot of experiential and hands-on learning in these courses. Students get to use industry quality equipment such as ultrasound machines, ECG monitors, and x-ray machines. They also learn using realistic models for learning to draw blood, give IV's and perform suturing. They also use real pig hearts, lungs, kidneys, and bone to do dissections during the anatomy courses.

Meet Mitchell White, our Metals Teacher. Mr. White was born and raised in Portland and moved down south where he started working in the metal industry and stayed for about 20 years before coming back to Oregon to join a pressure vessel company. He met his wife three years ago and moved to our bay area where he began working at North Bend High School.
The Metals program has 10 courses, starting with Introduction to Metals Technology, and nine other classes that offer multiple welding processes, blueprint interpretation, machining, and fabrication.

Meet Danny Alacali, our CTE Business & Media Arts Teacher. He is the owner and operator of a small business, Design Zone, for 20 years. He’s worked with a vast array of clients, specializing in Print Production & Graphic Design. Mr. A’s strengths in marketing encompass all creative aspects of Design, Logo creation, Print Literature, Photography, Videography and more.
Mr. A is excited to now be a part of the CTE program and North Bend High School! The classes he offers are Business Foundations, Personal Finance, Entrepreneurship, Marketing & Production, Visual Design (Novice, Intermediate & Advanced), Video Production and Effects, and Photography 1 & 2 with more classes being added in the future!
This day of twos, or “Twosday” as it has been called, is a special day for many reasons. The “two” sounding day actually falls on a Tuesday, and it is a palindrome.
A palindrome means that a word, phrase or date can be read the same way backwards and forwards. In this instance, it works no matter the format you read dates — month-day-year, day-month-year, or year-month-day.
The next palindrome date will occur on 1/20/3021, according to The Farmer’s Almanac.
In honor of Presidents Day, our schools and offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 21. Enjoy the three-day weekend and we'll pick back up on Tuesday, Feb. 22!

Please congratulate the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award Winner in the Contributor to Education category, Nurse Kelly Barnett . This category recognizes someone who contributes time and effort to the learning of a student(s) and is not a licensed educator.
Kelly Barnett has modeled a growth mindset for our community. When the pandemic hit, she saw their job description suddenly expand. The physical and mental health of our youth faced new challenges, and our school nurses rose to the occasion.
